The BelTox annual scientific meeting of 2024 (AM24) will be organized together with the Belgian Environmental Mutagen Society (BEMS) and will take place at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University on the 5th December 2024.

The theme of the meeting is “Novel non-clinical testing strategies for the development of human medicinal products”.

The meeting will be introduced by a presentation on non-clinical testing strategies for different types of drug modalities (Sonja Beken, FAMHP) to make the audience familiar with the wide variety of therapeutics, followed by a presentation on novel non-clinical safety approaches for small molecule drugs (Jean-Pierre Valentin, UCB) and a presentation on a risk based approach for non-clinical evaluation of advanced therapeutic medicinal products (Sofie Peirs, FAMHP). After the coffee break there will be a presentation on the preparation of a new ICH guideline on oligonucleotide safety testing with an industry perspective (EFPIA member) and we will have a dedicated poster session with elevator pitches.

After lunch, there will be a presentation on novel genetic toxicology approaches for small molecule drugs and a talk on genomic stability for gene/cell therapies. The afternoon will continue with a presentation on the current state of and alternatives to NHPs in non-clinical safety studies (Fred Brouta, UCB and Peter van Meer, MEB) and a talk on platform approaches for mRNA vaccines.

Young scientist competition

As every year, BelTox will organize during this meeting a young scientist contest for the best presentations and posters of PhD students. The two best presentations and two best posters will receive a prize.

If you are a PhD student and wish to present results of your PhD work to an audience of professionals in toxicology and ecotoxicology you can participate in the Young Scientist Competition. You can present your work as an oral presentation or as a poster. The abstract of your presentation can be sent to admin@beltox.be and will be reviewed by a jury of BelTox scientists. You are invited to use the abstract format which you can find here.

Please mark whether you want to present your work as an oral presentation or as a poster. From the abstracts for oral presentations the jury will select the four best ones to be presented at the meeting. The other abstracts and poster abstracts, if acceptable to the jury, will then have to be presented as a poster. A jury composed of the lecturers of the annual meeting will then select the two best oral presentations and two best posters who will receive a price. The subject of the presentations/posters is not limited to the subject of the Annual Meeting and can be any interesting subject in toxicology and ecotoxicology.

The deadline of the submission of the Young Scientist Competition abstracts is the 1st November 2024.  The participants will be informed of the decision of the jury afterwords.

Poster session

Beside the poster presentations within the context of the Young Scientist Competition also other posters are welcome. If you are interested to present a poster out-of-competition, the abstract can be sent to admin@beltox.be and will be reviewed by a jury of BelTox scientists. You are invited to use the abstract format which you can find here.

The deadline of the submission of the free poster abstracts is the 1st November 2024.  The participants will be informed of the decision of the jury afterwords.
