Origin of BelTox

The Belgian Society of Toxicology and Ecotoxicology, abbreviated as BelTox, was founded in 1988 and its statutes were published in the Official Journal of Belgium in June 1989.
BelTox is a member of the European Society of Toxicology (EUROTOX), an umbrella organization for national toxicology societies.

BelTox aims to facilitate networking

The BelTox Steering Committee is comprised of professionals active as toxicologists in different sectors of society such as academia, authorities, scientific institutions, contract organizations, consulting and industry.
The main objective of BelTox is to establish contacts between scientists in all fields of toxicology and ecotoxicology in Belgium, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and encourage research initiatives and collaboration.

Annual scientific meetings

Since its foundation, BelTox has organized annual scientific meetings on various scientific and regulatory themes such as biotransformation, acute toxicology, skin sensitization, reproductive toxicology, endocrine disruption, environmental bio-availability, nanotoxicology and many more!

Also general topics such as the classification of dangerous substances, risk assessment, good laboratory practices, and laboratory animal care are discussed.

Do you have an interesting topic you would like to see presented in the annual meeting?

Do you want to co-organize an event with BelTox?

Do not hesitate and contact us for more information via admin@beltox.be!

Young Scientist Competition (YSC)

Since 2003, BelTox offers young scientists the opportunity to present their work via an oral or poster presentation to an audience of fellow scientists and experienced professionals from all sectors during the annual scientific meeting. The two best oral presentations and two best posters receive an award. The Young Scientist Competition (YSC) is organized every year at the occasion of the scientific annual meeting.

Introductory Courses

BelTox regularly organizes one-day introductory courses on toxicology and ecotoxicology for people who did not receive training in this area, but who are confronted with health and environmental hazard and risk assessment of chemicals through their professional activities (e.g. regulators, lawyers, journalists, teachers, health workers, members of trade associations).

During these courses topics such as health and environmental hazard and risk assessment, exposure assessment and risk communication are addressed and, if required, adapted to the needs of the audience.

The lectures are provided by experienced professionals in the area of health and environmental risk assessment from authorities, academia, industry, consulting and contract organizations.

Are you interested in setting-up such a course for your employees?

Advanced toxicology courses and workshops

BelTox also organizes advanced courses in (eco)toxicology and workshops on various topics.

So far, these courses covered repeated dose toxicology, embryo-fetal development toxicology, pitfalls and regulatory issues in genotoxicity testing, skin and pulmonary sensitization, nonclinical safety assessment of biopharmaceuticals and many other themes.

Are you interested in setting-up such an advanced course or specific workshop for your employees?

In 2010 BelTox launched the ‘Belgian Chapter of European Registered Toxicologists’. This register recognizes professionals in the field of toxicology and ecotoxicology based on a peer review process. The Belgian Register currently includes 71 professionals in (eco)toxicology.

Applications to this register are reviewed on a yearly basis by a jury comprising delegates from the 3 constitutive societies (BelTox, BEMS and BLT).

A detailed description of the selection criteria and application procedure is available on this website via the link ERT: Click here.
