The BelTox annual scientific meeting of 2023 (AM23) has taken place in the Auditoire Maisin at the Brussels campus of the UCLouvain, Avenue E. Mounier 51, 1200 Brussels on December 7th 2023. The theme of the meeting was “Advances in the Risk Assessment of Chemical Mixtures”.
Jacob van Klaveren (RIVM) set the stage by providing a State of the Science. Next, recent advances in the field were discussed by Andreas Kortenkamp (Brunel University) who looked into the use NAMs and MAF, and by Robert Pasanen-Kase (SECO) who discussed the use of AOPs. Interesting case studies were provided by Juan-Carlos Carillo (Shell) who presented an assessment approach for oil and wax hydrocarbons, by Birgit Mertens (Sciensano) who described the recent work on mycotoxin mixtures in food and by Hugo Waeterschoot (Eurometaux) who provided an industry perspective on mixture risk assessment of chemicals in the environment. We concluded the series of presentations by looking further into the future; Sarah Leverato (EFSA) discussed the EFSA Roadmap for pesticide risk assessment.
In addition to the short Q&A sessions after each presentation, we foresaw a longer session after the last presentation during which we were able to discuss the learnings and questions accumulated during the different presentations and deepened the exchanges between the presenters and meeting participants.
As every year, BelTox organized during this meeting a young scientist contest for the best presentations and posters of PhD students. The presentations and the two best posters have receive a prize.
