On 29 September 2026, BelTox invites all Early Career Scientists (ECS) to the ToxMinds building in Brussels for an inspiring afterwork networking event focused on career paths in toxicology.
This free event offers a unique opportunity to learn more about career opportunities in the field, connect with fellow ECS, and network with members of the BelTox Steering Committee. Participation is limited to 20–30 attendees, so registration is required.

- 17:45 – Career Opportunities in Toxicology presented by Mark Martens, PhD, ERT
In this presentation an overview is given of the career opportunities for toxicologists in the pharmaceutical industry as well as in other industries such as the agrochemical, food, cosmetic, consumer products and chemical industries. Not only careers in industry are addressed but also in academia, regulatory authorities, consulting companies and contract research organisations. For each of these sectors, an overview is given of the type of activities where toxicologists are involved. Toxicology is a multidisciplinary science, and a career in toxicology can be pursued starting from a variety of university degrees in the biomedical area. Therefore, attention is paid to the basic education and requirements for a successful career as a toxicologist. Also, the possibilities of postgraduate training are discussed and how they can contribute to becoming an experienced toxicologist and taking on career opportunities even beyond the role of toxicologist. To enhance credibility in consulting, legal testimony and defence of toxicology dossiers in courts and at national and international authorities, it is essential to be recognised by peers as a qualified toxicologist. This can be done by applying for certification. An overview is given of the most important certifications for toxicologists that are available worldwide.
