On the 27th of October 2022 BelTox organized a one day open course on (eco)toxicology and risk assessment for non-professionals in chemical risk assessment such as regulators, registration managers, product safety managers, industrial hygienists, lawyers, journalists, etc. The course was held at the Elewijt conference center and was attended by 33 participants mostly from industry. The morning and afternoon sessions were chaired by Erik Van Miert (Sciensano). The course started with an introduction to toxicology (Erik Van Miert, Sciensano) followed by more specific presentations on hazard assessment such as local tolerance (An Van Rompay, Penman Consulting), systemic toxicity (Mark Martens, MMTA), aquatic toxicity (Jana Asselman, UGent), in silico toxicology (Monica Autiero, ToxMinds), exposure assessment (Peter Hoet, KULeuven) and health (Mark Martens, MMTA) and environmental (Francesca Tencalla, ToxMinds) risk assessment. The course was closed with a presentation on risk communication and management (Jacques de Gerlache). Ample opportunity was offered for questions at the end of the morning and afternoon sessions. The course was perceived as a high quality training and appeared to be in line with the expectations and needs of the participants. Since a lot of material was communicated in one day’s time it was suggested to spend more time on each subject. To do this, next courses of this kind will be split into two one day courses, one on toxicology and health risk assessment and one on ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment.
